This month we are celebrating the 60th anniversary of the transistor...one of the greatest inventions of the 20th century. The first transistor designed in 1947 by Bell Labs was way smaller than a vacuum tube but still relatively large by today's standards. As it shrunk, the transistor found its way into hearing aids, phones, radios and eventually became the essential part of the microprocessor-the brains inside a computer. Now the technology is in every aspect of our lives...in our homes, our hospitals, our appliances, our pockets, our phones, in the cars we drive, the buses we take and the ATMs we use.

While the first IBM PCs had over 130-thousand transistors inside Intel processors, the recently introduced Intel(R) 45nm Core(TM) 2 Extreme processor holds more than 820 million transistors, making for record-breaking speeds in PCs, laptops, and servers. Intel's latest innovation is revolutionizing transistors, making them so tiny...more than 30 million can fit onto the head of a pin! Unlike previous transistors, the new ones are lead-free and made using a special metal, hafnium, that results in more energy efficient computer chips that perform better too.
